The Atlanta Regional Commission reports that by 2015, Atlanta’s older adult population will have doubled. By 2030, one out of every five residents will be over the age of 60. With the housing slump meaning more and more homeowners are deciding to make their present home their “forever” residence, a cottage industry has arisen of contractors who can help them adapt their homes to their changing needs.

Contractors like Richard Hoffman, owner of Specialty Builders Remodeling in Conyers, have seen an increased need for their special skills. Hoffman is a National Association of Home Builders Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) and a National Association of the Remodeling Industry-approved Universal Design Certified Remodeler (UDCR). Either one of those designations allows contractors to recommend features that homeowners can adopt to make their home accessible as they age.

Richard Hoffman is Atlanta’s First Universal Design Certified Remodeler and Certified Aging in Place Specialist

Richard Hoffman of Specialty Builders Remodeling — a stable, reliable, and reputable source for home remodeling since 1985 — recently was awarded a Universal Design Certified Remodeler designation from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).

Hoffman is Atlanta’s first Universal Design Certified Remodeler (UDCR) and Certified Aging in Place Specialist. He is also the only remodeler in the state of Georgia to have been awarded this designation.

As the adult population grows older, the housing industry is recognizing the importance of a “universal” approach to residential design that modifies standard building elements to improve a home’s accessibility, usability, and value.

Recently, NARI established the UDCR designation to promote the highest standards of universal design and remodeling through credentialing of remodeling professionals.

Once Richard Hoffman learned of the new UDCR designation, it was as if NARI had constructed the program with Specialty Builders Remodeling in mind.

“It’s logical that we were designated a UDCR, as we have been experts on aging in place design issues for the past two decades,” said Hoffman.

“Also, with an aging father living by himself at home, I know very well the value and necessity of universal design as it relates to seniors.”

Since the company’s founding in 1985, Specialty Builders Remodeling has been committed to a quality construction process and outstanding customer service.

They are state licensed and specialize in remodeling kitchens, bathrooms, new additions, attic conversions, basements, and whole home remodeling.

To schedule an appointment and learn more about universal design and how it improves a home’s accessibility, usability, and value, please contact us.
